Litter Box Troubleshooting Checklist

Use this comprehensive checklist to evaluate your litter box setup. Check all items that currently meet the standard.

N+1 Rule Compliance: Number of boxes = Number of cats + 1 extra
Example: 2 cats = 3 boxes, 3 cats = 4 boxes

Multi-Level Distribution: Litter boxes placed on multiple floors/levels of your home

Adequate Size: Box is at least 1.5 times your cat’s length (nose to tail base)

No Hoods/Covers: Box is uncovered or at least one uncovered option is available

Easy Access Entry: Low sides for kittens, seniors, or arthritic cats

Daily Scooping: Waste removed 1-2 times daily (minimum once)

Monthly Deep Cleaning: Complete wash with mild soap every 2-4 weeks

Unscented Litter: No perfumes or deodorizers added

Proper Depth: 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) of litter in each box

Clumping Quality: Fine-grained, low-dust clumping litter (if using clumping type)

Quiet, Low-Traffic Locations: Away from noisy appliances and high human activity areas

Separation from Food/Water: Boxes not placed next to feeding stations

Multiple Escape Routes: Boxes not in dead-end corners where cats could feel trapped
